Chrysler Minivan - Brake Shift Interlock Lawsuit

BRAKE SHIFT INTERLOCK: The brake shift interlock (sometimes referred to as the park shift interlock) is a safety device that prevents a vehicle with an automatic transmission from being moved out of "park" and into "drive" or "reverse" until the driver depresses the brake pedal. The presence of the brake shift interlock ensures that a vehicle is not inadvertently moved into reverse or drive, thereby causing a hazard to those in and around the vehicle. Such unintentional "rollaway" accidents have been caused by children and even pets, and have resulted in property damage, bodily injury, and even death.

The brake shift interlock is particularly important for minivans because they are designed for families with children, and they provide passengers easy access between the front and back seats.

Chrysler minivans, including the Dodge Caravan, Plymouth Voyager, and Chrysler Town and Country, are the most popular minivans in America, and Chrysler has promoted them on the basis of safety, proudly proclaiming them to be the "safest minivan in the world."

However, while other companies have been installing the brake shift interlock as a standard safety device since the early 1990's, Chrysler has failed to do so. As a result, there have an unknown number of "rollaway" accidents resulting in injury and death, which might have been prevented with the installation of the brake shift interlock - a $9.00 part.
